Hello, everyone!  Welcome to the Class Wiki for Nels P. Highberg's section of RPW 210: Foundations of Argument for Fall 2010.  The wiki itself is public, and we hope that people find the student annotations useful.  Only class members can edit, though.  But check out the links in the sidebar for a range of topics you might wish to explore if you are interested in food-related issues.  If you wish to know more about the class, check out the class blog.

Students

You can find instructions for uploading your podcast and a place to link to your podcast on the Podcasts page.

Here are the topics pages where you can post your annotations:

They are also listed on the sidebar to the right.  If you have an article or website that fits more than one category, just put it in one place.  If you have a source, and you do not know where it fits, ask me.  I can tell you where to put it or create a new category for it.  Also, please do not edit this page.  Edit only the topics page.

All annotations should state with a citation of the source in MLA format.  The citation should be bolded.  After that, in regular type, you should type the annotation.  All annotations should be in alphabetical order.  Since only one person can write an annotation on any source (no matter if that one source can be posted in different categories or not), the way to reserve an article is to post the citation for it ASAP.  You can come back and post the annotation itself anytime before the deadlines stated on the prompt.

If you are getting emails anytime anyone makes changes to these pages, you can stop them by clicking on "account" on the top right.  Then, click on the tab that says "Home" and look for the drop-down menu that says "Notify me when my workspaces change" near the bottom.  Choose "Never," and you will never get emails when people make changes.  You can also change it to once and day or any other time if you do want that information.

Sample Annotation

Here is what a complete annotation looks like.

Dowie, Mark.  "Food Among the Ruins: Should Detroit Be Converted Into a Farming Mecca?"  AlterNet.  30 April 2010.  Web.  4 November 2010.  In this article, Dowie focuses first on the problems being faced in Detroit because no major grocery store chains exist in the city.  Second, he describes his ideas for how to address this problem.  He says that Detroit is a "food desert," which means that "healthy food is more than twice as far away as unhealthy food."  His solution is to turn the abandoned and unused land of Detroit into a working farm where fruits and vegetables are grown in some areas and animals are raised in other areas.  He believes this would not only help people find healthier food but also create a stronger sense of community and create jobs, too.  It is a fascinating proposal that sounds really good on a lot of levels.  Instead of having to bring in food from elsewhere, the citizens of Detroit can become much more self-sustaining.  This could become a model for urban areas that are not food deserts, too.  My one criticism is what would happen in winter.  Detroit winters are not easy to withstand, and food could not be grown during the harshest months.  Can enough food be created in the rest of the year to make up for when growing season ends?  If so, this is an idea that might be worth exploring.

Basically, bold the citation but not the annotation.  Leave the styling at normal, leave the font at "Font," and make the font size 12pt.  Put all annotations in alphabetical order skipping one line between each.  Each annotation should be one paragraph.
